Re: Massive Samsung Recall For Exploding Fridges!

In ref to looking for a reason for the explosions, has anyone actually seen pics of the evaporator covers being blown off?

I have repaired a different one of these every day without fail for the last 5 years and I’ve come across a holed evaporator pipe due to burnt out heater only once. (an RSH1)

But the only pics I have seen of the explosions, including the one on the front page only show the fridge or freezer side wall exploding.

    Strange!

Yes they have and most of the stock has been sold off already and at silly prices. In fact some of it has already been sold on overseas!

HP ipaq 6515. Phone, sat-nav, web, outlook + exchange, office apps, databases, camera, MP3 player, video etc. and yes Ken, you can also write notes on its touch screen while talking to your customer on the phone using your bluetooth ear piece!

Better still, these notes can be attributed to any program your in, which is especially usefull as entries into your outlook diary and it will even also convert your note using OCR into text!

Then you can either syncronise over the web to your exchange server and diary there and then or wait till you get home and do it on the PC.

i do agree tho, that there are a lack of decent programs out there that will cater exactly for what we do but, there are some out there that come close but at a price.

    Re: Currys Exchanges

I should point out in CDSL’s favour that they did consult agents in January of last year and asked for opinions, sugestions and more to the point, estimates of costings for the removal, fitting and disposal of appliances.

My disapointment is, that although all the issues etc were presented, addressed and costed for this kind of venture, it seems to have been a waste of time as no feedback was received since then and the scheme has been rolled out just as if it was another job with scant regard to the operatives who they want to do the work.

It could be though, that CDSL just find themselves under pressure to do something after all this time and hope that enough agents will go along with it to make it work.

Just to put things into pespective, it is estimated that this work would increase the workload by 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. So if you take say 20 calls a week from this source normally, that could be an extra 100 calls a year to you and an extra 100 calls to the recycler.

Now times that visit by your average call out fee which, is what you should charge for the delivery to your weee recycler or, if you put it another way, the job you can’t do and charge for while your off to the recycler.

A hell of a lot of money, ain’t it??

wsts wrote:I dont get it, its an “exchange” appliance, I am taking it that they mean an uplift ?

If so why dont they want the old one back ?

I think they do! But they want you to cop for the uplift/delivery.

    The facts are;

-You, according to the terms ARE “responsible” for the disposal of the old appliance.
-Well, you wouldn’t want it yourself as you’ve most likely written it off.
-The customer has already been told that you are removing the appliance at no extra charge so you cannot leave it.
-All of the authorities now charge for collection (as a direct result of weee) so unless you want to pay it, that’s out.
-You cannot take it to the tip yourself as you will be charged a commercial rate
-So you are left with only one option, the published list of “Recycling Sites” which coincidentally all happen to be Currys stores!

Yes Ken, I’m sure they think it’s a good deal but, who for?

    Re: Laptops.

    Your welcome,

The ipaq is wireless with both bluetooth and wifi.

Portable bluetooth printers are available so you can print from any program you are using. i.e. from word, excel, acess or to any purpose designed program or database etc. and because it has a touch screen, you can capture a signiture directly into your document before printing it out.

The are also wireless foldable keyboards available at £15 if you find the builtin one or touch screen too fiddly.

The manuals, documents etc. I keep on SD cards which slide into 2 slots, but in reality I only the 1 as it can hold 8GB which is more that enough.

    Good luck with the search.

    Re: Laptops.

    Hi Chris,

I found that the dilema was a combination of costs and transportation.

A laptop can be a very costly piece of equipment, not only to buy but also to replace if it gets damaged or lost etc.

It is also another piece of equipment you have to lumber around with you.

My solution was to buy a hand held computer, i.e. hp ipaq 6515. These are around £450 off the shelf, but if you get one direct from Vodafone or Misco on a phone contract, you can reduce that to free!

The advantage is that you have a very small computer that will sync with your home computer/server/ISP etc and also doubles as a SATNAV, phone, camera, mp3, video etc, etc…

I carry all my technical files/manuals on it and because I have a microsoft exchange server package with my web provider, all my emails and diary etc are syncronised while I’m out and about so I never miss a job. (You can also set it up to sync with your ISP mail accounts, ie msn)

There are loads more features etc and software available, too much to go on about, but after using this for the last 3 years, It’s been the best investment I made since starting up on my own.

Re: Do you repair Induction hobs?

You can fit one above an oven but make sure you follow the install instructions on venting and insulation.

One more thing to consider if you are thinking about buying one, is that they usually “power share”.

That is they will usually only allow you to operate two plates on “full power” while limiting the other two to “half power” if you try and use more than two on full power at any one time.

This is’nt usually a problem tho’ as it’s unlikely you’ll need more than two on full power at any one time!

Great pieces of kit! (if you can afford them!)

Re: I ripped their floor vinyl.

I’ve been doing this many years and find the easiest thing is to ask the customer for a cloth and use (fairy) soapy water to wet the floor with.

You can do this while explaining the pit falls of moving an appliance on said flooring and while your taking every care not to damage it, with their permission you will attemp it only if they agree that you will except no liability. (Put it in writing on the job sheet)

Luckily I’ve not ripped one since using thick soapy water and you also avoid a claim if the customer slips a breaks her neck on the polished floor if you try mr sheen!

Re: WHATS THE FASTEST WAY OF DEFROSTING A FROST FREE?

On the “american” type (samsung,LG,daewoo) you can put the fridge or freezer or both in forced defrost mode to bring on the heaters (if they work) while you attack with a hair dryer. This cuts down defrost into minutes!
Press and hold “power freeze+fridge temp” for 8 sec.
You will then get a continual bleeping.
Press fridge temp again to turn off compressor and press again to put heaters on for fridge, again for both fridge/freezer.

For other models, I found it a bonus to make up some leads that will plug into the various heaters found (if they are working-test first) attached to a flying lead that you can plug into an RCD protected extention.

    Re: Scary Chinese Dishwashers

I suppose I should say something at this point, although you will all already know how bad these are.

They have inhearent design/manufacturing faults, all of which contribute to the +/-80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} failure rate.

    In no particular order;

PCB CONTOL MODULE FAILURES (especially CBE12/CBE7) PROGRAMME.

PCB CONTROL BOARD FAILURE, TRNSFORMER (UPRATED BUT STILL FAILS).

ELECTRIC SHOCKS FROM CONTROL BUTTONS. (240v under there you know!!) don’t wet your hands!

HINGE BARS BENDING (max design load 4kilos on door!!!).

    DOOR SEALS FALLING OFF.

    HINGE PINS FALLING OUT/SNAPPING.

FLOODING/OVERFILL (manufacturer blames 3in1 tabs but we know better) PCB causes this due to either transformer failure or glitch in programme at second fill.
New models gone away from over fill post in tub to ducts in corner of doors. (Has it cured the problem??) er, no.

NEW MODELS USE LOWER GRADE ST/ST FOR BASE OF TUB, NOW SEEING CRACKS APPEARING IN THE FRONT CORNERS WHERE THE DOOR RESTS. (check here first for leak as its hard to find)

DID SOMEONE SAY “TWISTED”? WELL, 1 BOWL OF RICE BETWEEN 2 GUYS HAND LOADING IS FAR CHEAPER THAN USING A TRUCK!!! BELEIVE ME! THAT’S HOW THEY DO IT! (had cause to quarantine 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of stock once because of this)

DID I MENSION DOOR STRIKERS MISSING? (be suprised how many customers don’t notice!)

EARTH FAULTS? usually water leaking from r/h side vent, running around the tub join and onto the heater terminals. OBVIOUS EH!

I could go on I suppose but I think you get the picture… ❗

    great, thanks for that!

The ise site pic is ok and I can edit, but if I can get hold of the logo in its original vector format, I can better re-size it/format it for different things without loss of quality. (If that’s ok??)

I’ll drop you a line later in the week Ken 😀

Nice advert! Do you have any new ones that show the machine as it is now?

I have paint-shop pro + adobe mill packages so could edit to suit, the original?

Any pics, grafix or text that’s available would be great!
