I let it drain and dry and when I turned it on again a few days later, it filled with water and then started making a crackling noise – sounded like the water was getting ont he components or something.

Anyway – it is knackered!!
And unfortunately you don’t have any engineers in my area.

Thanks for that Dave. I have done the draining bit – talk about a lot of water!! Now I have to wait and see if it works in a few days.
