    Thanks Penguin45 – I think your diagnosis was spot on. In terms of hunting the leak I think it is likely to be the the main seal that the door closes against. One side of the small horizontal bit at the bottom (near the hinge) seemed to have been forced out by dirt. However it is not clear how that bit if seal is meant to sit. The rest of the seal just fits into the clips but the small horzontal couple of centimetres at the bottom does not seem to have any clip. Is some sort of glue or sealant used to fix that? The other side seems to be firmly fixed. Grateful for further advice and thanks for your help so far.

    An amazing twist! We had decided to do the defrost over the weekend, when we would have cleared food out the freezer, but magically after 5 days the fridge has started to work again. I suspect you diagnosis was correct and it had defrosted sufficiently of its own accord.

    We’ll see how things go. Thanks again for your help.
