i would definatly look into getting an appliance engineer round to take a look no doubt he will fix it and save you alot of time it sounds like some bearing or cap on the fan has got a fault with it or somthing along them lines as you say u found that

“the ‘fan’ had come away from the pump and was causing a loud grinding noise. I pushed it back on and everything seemed fine. “
