sussed it myself – just removed small spade terminal on the end of a lead from inside motor casing, and then remaining flat terminal can be removed from housing by sliding forwards until slot lines up with housing, then spring pops out, along with carbon brush. thanks for your help greg.

will they be willing to advise on procedure or will they want to do the job?

i’m a qualified mechanical engineer, and should be able to do the job, just don’t want a pile of bits on me bench if i undo the wrong screws!
