ParticipantRe: AL3 Alarm code on AEG Favorit 64800
Putting in a new heating element has fixed the problem (eventually!) so if anyone else out there gets an AL3 error code during the main wash cycle then you know where to start.
Thanks to everyone on the forum who advised me on this.

Apologies for not responding – been away for a while.
Anyway, I’m still awaiting the part from the engineer which has taken forever, but AEG & the engineer seem pretty sure it’s only the heating element that’s caput. The guy comes on Friday to install it so i will update you then.
More worrying is that the AEG helpdesk said that the heating element fails quite regularly.

The fuse hasn’t gone and the machine still attempts parts of its various cycles & even completes a cold pre-wash so it seems highly unlikely that there is anything wrong with the motherboard. I would have expected nothing to work in that case.
The fact that he could have tested for a blown motherboard leads me to think that my suspicions were probably correct, so thanks for that. I’ll ask him to replace the element and hope he doesn’t put a knife through the motherboard in the process – perhaps I’m being a tad harsh and cynical.

Just had the engineer around and he’s confirmed that the heating element has gone and a new one will cost around £70. Seems a lot but I can live with that. However, he also said that when the heating element goes it nearly always means that the motherboard has gone as well (another £200). This sounds like he’s trying to pull a fast one. What do others think? Is there a correlation between the heating element failing and the motherboard blowing?

Guess I was hoping to avoid an unnecessary call out charge by checking it wasn’t something I could fix myself (e.g blocked pipe) rather than something I probably need an engineer for (e.g dodgy heating element).
Looks like I’ll have to get the cheque book out after all.
thanks for your help.

thanks for that.
Is there an easy way I can find out for sure that the problem is in the heating element before I call an engineer in?
