    Update:-
    Removed the machine from its built in situ. Decided after much umming and arring that the bottom cover would be the best to remove. Bingo, I can see everything; located the water heater and circuit tested, damn, damn, damn and blast. It tested ok. I suppose that I ought to be grateful as the pipe clips look a bu**er to remove and replace.
    Next step circuit test to the heater, see kwatt, I still had confidence in your advice.
    Low and behold, where the wires curve under the door to go up to the top switches, a white wire was broken, as was the plastic sheathing around them mind you.
    Removed door panels, replaced wire, botched plastic sheathing together, replaced door panels after much profanity and replaced machine back in situ after a certain amount of umming and arring (ran out of new swear words)
    Upshot is, everything running A-OK
