    Thanks Martin. I think the motors still ok, am still getting the same resistance across the connections. The capacitor wiring is very simple (its non electrolytic so no polarity to worry about) although I take on board what you said about even new ones can be faulty. Will be going back to the shop shortly to discuss with them.

    Incidentaly what would be the symptoms if the capacitor were to go faulty (obviously if open circuit there would be silence) so i am assuming short circuit. Would the motor still run?

    Can’t quite understand why the thing just sits and hums. Any clues?

    The pump assembly is bolted directly onto the end of the motor and the impeler driven of an extension of the armature/rotor so theres no room for over or under tightening. The whole rotor and impeler section spins freely from either end by hand.
