Thanks for all your advice, I think I have cleared things up. I have spoken to the spares department and apparently this type of “button” sensor is used by Smeg for a variety of functions including a door thermal cut-out and in my case, the temperature sensor.
So the position of mine is where the water level should be so must be carrying out this function. Anyway, I have ordered a new one and hopefully it is this and not the control module which is at fault!jones10

Thanks all for your patience. There is definitely no sensor in the element, the only wiring to the element is the power supply (brown, blue and earth) their are no spade terminas for a sensor. There is only one sensor on the drum within a grommet as described at about the twenty five minutes past position. This is closed circuit across the terminals with no resistance. As previously mentioned this is refered to as a door thermal cut-out in the parts list.
I hoped to post a photo but I dont think this is possible here.jones10

Thanks Lawrence, but as I said, there is no sensor in the heater element (I have removed the element to check) and the only sensor on the base of the drum is something refered to in the spares list as the Door Thermal Cut-out element. I can see the sensors on the drier duct but the problem appears to be with the sensor that must control the water temperature in the drum and there is no sign of this anywhere!
