Penguin 45, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Closer inspection of the pump (after removal) showed the windings to be discoloured.

Initially I was a little mystified as to how the pump temp. was monitored but then noticed an in-line device tucked under the power input terminals.

I powered up the motor in a vice, after carefully isolating each terminal from the other, and applied a light load to the impeller and sure enough after 15 – 20 sec the pump stopped. I’ve ordered the part reasonably confident we’ve found the fault.

Keep up the great work. (I’m listening to the Sydney test …. not sounding good for your blokes).
