ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWG 220/1 – drum not rotating
I’ve now received the capacitor and installed it, but this doesn’t seem to be the answer (or not all of it). Machine ran for about 10 minutes, and then stalled. Investigation with the back panels off confirms that the belt is OK and that the drum bearing is all right (drum rotates freely with the belt disconnected).
I could still feel a vibration at the end of the motor shaft by the pulley connection with the power on, and with the belt off the motor started running again. Refitting the belt and turning the power back on resulted in the drum rotating for a couple of minutes, and then stalling again.
Turning the end of the motor shaft with the power off and the belt removed, it rotates fairly freely – can spin round quite easily. It will occasionally stop at a ‘sticky’ point, but this is quite easily turned past by hand. However, even if it is rotating perfectly freely by hand with the power off, as soon as the power is applied (still with the belt off) the shaft ‘freezes’ quite solid and cannot, or only barely, move.
I assume from all this that there is a problem with the motor. Any ideas? And given the age of the machine, any chance of this being repairable at a reasonable cost?

Many thanks for the quick response. I’ve ordered the part and hopefully that will solve the problem.
Thanks again.

Thanks for this reply. Just picked this up after being away – and having to use the machine, discovered that the drum rotation on the dryer cycle has now re-started and is apparently working OK. I’m unsure what this means but am reluctant to do anything while it’s working, although I’ll check the filter trap (can’t see any problem with the sink union).
Although the machine is 8 years old, for its first 5 years it was hardly used at all. It has only been used regularly in the last 3 years – would the drive motor brushes be worn in that time?
