Thanks for the advice guys, have spoken to the repair company again, all their replies have been shrouded in vagueness but have been offered a different engineer to take a look free of charge. Will see what happens.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi iadom,
Husband here, lara’s out to work atm so i can supply some more info. I have the sheared off end of broken bolt here, and the the engineer showed me a picture of the damage around the thread where the bolt goes but showed no evidence of damage to the rest of the drum.
It is the bottom of three bolts holding the counterweight to the left front of the drum casing. He mentioned we should be able to get just the front part but he would need to check – his boss phoned me back later to say it requires an entire new drum casing and needs to be taken to the workshop to repair.
I’ve spoken to the repair company again to try and get to the bottom of this, and he’s reiterated that the thread that the bolt fixes into has been damaged leaving too big a hole for a new bolt to go in. Which requires a new tank which he insists is £160+vat. I’ve asked for the exact name of the part he wishes to replace as he says it’s different from the front drum part!? confused.
Kwatt – thanks for the extra info about reasons for replacing the complete tank. This whole things sounds a bit suspicious now. We only have light use of the machine, usually 2, max 3 times a week. I realise the AW23 has a shorter lifecycle (2-2500 cycles if i remember) than some heavy duty machines but we thought with our light usage we might at least get to 5 years with it.
Thanks for all the advice guys, really appreciated.
I think you’ve answered already in a way but just to clarify the crus of the issue- I can’t ascertain which part of the tank this bolt gets attached to without taking the whole machine apart. Does the counterweight just bolt onto the front part of the casing? or does it pass through into another part of the tank?
Many Thanks,
Paul

Is there any chance of us changing the drum ourselves or is that madness? Be willing to take a punt on the parts if they are coming in around £50.

Wow, if those are the prices that’s a hell of a mark up.
We got the details of the company direct from ISE, so not sure if that makes them authorised?
What would you advise to do? Maybe get an unauthorised repair person to come and have a look? We have already spent £60 plus VAT on the first call out so I’m a bit worried about throwing good money after bad. But if the machine could be repaired it would be great.

Hi Iadom
Thanks for ur reply.
This is what we know from the repair tech: the bolt sheared off and the weight is now just spinning loose. The thread through to the drum is broken. Said that the whole drum would have to be replaced, which would cost £120 labour and £150 for the new drum plus VAT.
Do you think that sounds too much? Don’t suppose replacing the drum is a good option for DIYers, LOL.
Anyone got any thoughts about Siemens?
Cheers, Lara

Forgot to say I was attracted to the WM14Q390GB because it is has a best buy from an ahem, popular consumer magazine.
