SUCCESS! 😀
Just finished the first load. Turned out to be the drain pump after all – well done and huge thanks Martin. Thanks also Bryan for your input.
For those with similar issues, can I just add that I’m sure a tech would have spotted this within minutes. I had watched the old pump’s impeller spin and to be honest, it looked fine (even when taken out) and it sounded quiet. However, as soon as the new pump kicked in, there was a really clear gurgling noise as water gushed through the system/standpipe.
I guess I’m not as observant as I thought – the noise difference was so obvious.lateintheday

New pump (ASKOLL) arrived today. Typically, the electrical connections are different – the old pump had parallel terminals and connected by a plastic encased block. The new pump has a perpendicular arrangement. I note that this can be replaced with separate spade connections, but do they need to be anything special? Insulated or just bog standard.

Hi chaps, I haven’t ruled out that both of you are right!
With the dirty washing backing up I tried to find a workaround for now since the parts shop want me to return the element before they order the new part – looking at another few days without the washer apparently.
I found that after the wash cycle stops, if I put the machine onto drain it makes all the right noises for a couple of minutes but then won’t let me rinse. However, if I pause the washer after the wash cycle and open the filter, quite a lot of water comes out. Then it does let me do the rinse and spin. Almost as though the weight of the water is too great for the motor.
Tempted to get a new pump because of this – plus, it can’t hurt matters.lateintheday

Hi Martin, the outcome so far is that my wife thinks I’m an idiot for taking so long to fix the washer. 😕
Thought I might try one more thing tonight. As mentioned above, is it worth trying to isolate the problem by disconnecting the power from the heater element and simply doing a cold wash cycle to see if it still throws up the 3 flash error? If so, should I remove the earth from the heater as well.lateintheday

Quick update:
So, they’ve said they will order in another part and let me swap it/try it out. They also said that they don’t expect this to make any difference because the fault was obviously with the PCB. They were keen to send an engineer to diagnose the problem – at my expense.
They wouldn’t give the manufacturer name or details of the element they supplied – just kept avoiding the question. I said I simply wanted to check that the part they supplied was compatible – go figure.lateintheday

Hi r600a – thanks for that.
I’ll have to ask my wife if she can agree an exchange/refund with the parts shop first since the new element cost about £30. If they say no, then I’ll take you up on your offer. Any idea of cost for the correct part?
Thanks again for your help.lateintheday

From my scribbled notes, the old element was stamped with RCA 0092 589 12 (possibly an R not 12). Also had 41021737.

Oh, forgot to say, the washer seems to drain quite quickly even though the time out error 3x flashes stops the programme. All of the visible water in the drum is gone in less than a minute, but I assume that there is more to it than what you can see. At this stage, (3 flashes) if I open the pump filter, about half a cup full of water pours out.
Does that help?lateintheday

Thanks for the responses chaps.
Martin, I was half expecting the pump might be working less efficiently and could be the prob. When I took the pump off, I pushed the impeller around with my finger and although there was no great resistance, there was a slight grating noise, as though powdered limescale might be behind it. Presumably, there’s no way to check this?R600a
The new element seems to work although I’m confused as to why this one has a thermistor and the last one didn’t. Can the thermistor (not connected by wire) still regulate the element or does the separately installed thermostat do this job. Both – elsewhere on this board, someone suggested removing the power supply from the element to isolate it and then run the machine. Would this be a good way to go? If so, should I simply run the washer on a selected cold wash?

Sorry, but just to add to the limescale bit, the pump filter and sump hose have been off half a dozen times over the last couple of days just to make sure they were not blocked by limescale shifting along the system.
