I may be misreading this. You talk about a relay associated with the compressor. Usually a condenser/capacitor is fitted between 2 of the windings to simulate 2 phases. If this breaks down, the compressor only sees a single phase & will just sit there and hum getting hot. Try replacing this condenser with one of the same value – make sure you fit it to exactly the same terminals as the one you replaced.
