    Thanks for the reply Martin.

It seems there’s a one man band here in Keswick.

But how can I tell if he’s any good?

I moved in my flat about 2 months ago and have exactly the same machine as you (even the sticker on the door!).
I could not work out how to use the dryer and have been looking ever since asking around and browsing internet for hours until I finally saw your post!
Next time I will press the half load button and will see how it goes!
    Thanks

    Hi Serena,

I’m glad the forum has helped you solve the dryer problem. It must have been very frustrating not being able to get it to work!

I have managed to find a scanned copy of the manual for the machine. If you want me to send you a copy, send me a PM with your email address, and I’ll forward a copy onto you (it’s a PDF file).

    I’m a minimalist – so don’t use conditioner!
Good news on the detergent front. Thanks 🙂

Your problem is that the syphon cover in the drawer has popped up. This is the grid assebmbly in the right hand slot of the drawer. You will need something flexible to wiggle in there and try and push it back down again. A wire coat hanger is a good weapon of choice.

Good to know what I’m dealing with. Problem is, the drawer doesn’t come out far enough to get anything into the drawer area. Definitely not enough space for a wire coat hanger. I can get a piece of paper in there, but nothing much thicker than that. I can’t think of anything I can use that would help. Suggestions welcome! ❓

If I can’t sort it out, is there any problem with me just putting the detergent in the drum with my clothes? ❓

If you leave the wash temp dial on maximum setting then set it to a 40° wash, it will do a 40° wash, set it to 60° and it will wash at 60°.

If you set the temp dial to 40° then set the machine to a 90° wash it will wash at 40°. The temperature dial can only reduce temperatures, it does not increase them.

PS. Programme for silks & special finishes was programme 9 on old Hotpoint machines. 😉

Thanks, this is very useful information.

And, after much trawling through the internet, I have managed to source a scanned version of the manual for this machine. Result!

The prewash looks like it will automatically be followed be programmes one and nine (Boil wash). You would probably have to manually stop it if you wanted to use a prewash for any other programme. 😕 Also a synthetic prewash, but only useable with the following programme, unless you manuallly adjust the knob to the desired programme after the prewash has completed. :rolls:

Correct about 1-9 you have to manually select the temperature.
    No programme 8……..
Programme 8 is for machine washable Silk, printed acetates and other delicate items (30 degree delicate wash). This is out of the user manual for a 25 Year old Servis Quartz 1000, this is the last place I saw 8.

This is an odd machine as the numbers correspond to garment care labels or they did. Let me explain, what used to be prog 4 ie a 50 degree synthetic wash is now a little bucket with a 50 inside with one bar underneath. So the fact you machine has both on is very strange, if it is 4 years old.
The care labels changed from numbers to symbols about 15 years ago.

    Hi Oliver,

    That does help explain things.

I feel more confident using the machine now.

Thanks a lot Oliver, and everyone who has contributed.

iadom wrote:TBH most of the basic wash details are on the front of the soap drawer, have you any particular questions about using the machine. We could take a stab at answering them by looking at your pictures.

I’d like to take you up on that offer.

I’m trying to understand the far right hand dial, the one with letters and number on it.

    Some starter questions…

If I use one of the settings 1-9, it looks to me like the temperature is determined by the setting I choose, eg setting 4 says 50 degrees. So what effect does the wash temperature have?

If I choose Pre-Wash, (never had this setting before) does it wait for me to choose a program after it’s finished?

I have only used a very basic washing machine before (no dryer), so feel as if I’ve been removed from kindergarten and thrown into a university!

I’m usually quite good at working things out, but whoever designed this dial is not working to the same set of logic as me!

eg There is no No 8 (but there is a No 9)!

The machine is 4 years old.

Thanks for the tip about drying – I’d never have worked that out!

Only 4 years old?! Goes to show I can’t believe everything I’m told. Doesn’t usually work in this direction (ie newer than I was told!)

You’re right – I’ve just found a screw that wasn’t there last time I looked!

Face plate now off – (pause for drum roll) – Diplomat Model 8702.

What a great response from this forum. Thank you one and all!

Sadly the plinth is solidly attached to the floor, and I can see no way of removing it without destroying it.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I don’t know what a rating plate is, but I’ve opened the door, and can see nothing that looks like a plate – it’s completely featureless.

    Thanks Jim,

No fittings or flaps available for me to inspect.

I’ve uploaded 5 photos to a Picasa Web album:

    http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/mara1618/WasherDryer#

Not done that before, so I hope it works.

    Hoping it rings some bells.

Forgot to say that I believe the machine may well be 15 years old, although it may never have been used.
