I might have found a solution. Unibond do a 2 part putty that sets rock hard. I molded it round the magnet on the shaft, then when it was set, trimmed away just enough for the outer part of the tacho to be fitted. The magnet is still fully encased in the putty. The machine is running fine at the moment. Fingers crossed.

Think I’ve found the problem. When I removed the bearing from the motor I unfortunately snapped the magnetic sensor ring in two. I fixed it back onto the motor shaft using araldite. That worked for a couple of days but I have now discovered that the araldite has failed and the magnet has become detached again. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement magnet, please.

I have tried a short spin cycle with nothing in the machine. It starts to spin for only a few revs then stops, then continues doing that until the end of the cycle. I did notice when I dismantled the motor that the brushes were only about 10-12 mm long. Do you think that replacing the brushes may help the problem??

Thanks for your comments trikidik. The machine has worked fine for a couple of days but this morning has developed a massive out of balance that rocks the machine and stops the spin cycle. I can’t think it has anything to do with what i did to repair the motor. Any ideas, please.

Problem solved. It was a failed bearing in the motor. I sourced a new bearing from a local supplier and fitted it after solving a couple of extra problems. Everything working normally now.
Wife isn’t too impressed; she was hoping I’d finally agree to a new machine.Martyn4526

Thanks for that. Sounds like you’ve done quite a bit of work on one of these. I’m hoping I won’t need to take the front of the drum off but that’s a great reference for the future. I’m in the middle of decorating at the moment but I’ll certainly work on your suggestions as soon as I can.
Thanks againMartyn4526

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I had thought it might be a bra wire because i’ve had that problem before. I will certainly have a look once more this time using a torch as you suggested. The noise seems to be a mid range frequency and I would have expected a bra wire to make a high frequency ‘squeal’.
Do you know if the front of the drum assembly can be removed while it is still in the machine. Thanks again

You could try cutting and pasting into Google Translate.
