Thanks for the suggestion Tony. I had a look at the wires and they seemed OK.
Machine now seems fixed. I figured that there was no mechainical problem with any components, just that some switch somewhere was preventing the Aquastop from allowing water in to fill the machine.
I took the sides off to get access to the water-level regulator. It looked gunged up so I cleaned it. Put it all back together and sure enough the machine came to life when I switched it on. I suppose it thought it was full of water, even when it was empy, and kept the valve shut.
