Quite simply water gets into the base, raises a little float, which in turn operates a switch which energises the pump.

Have just become a member so that I could post my thanks for the help I found with regard to my DCS14W. Though the main theme was about a year ago, the information was still very relevant, and being somewhat more practically minded than the lady who started the thread, have performed the tilt manouver as suggested, and my little washer is now happily going through a descale. I appreciate that there must be a cause of the problem and will investigate further later, but I am very happy hearing the washer going through it’s cycle. Especially as a new compact dishwasher would seem to be 10 cm wider and £200 + pounds more expensive.
