Thanks Dave for the suggestion. In the end I found a great deal on a Zanussi replacement machine for not much more than the cost of a new PCB, so have decided to consign the 10 year old AEG to the recyling centre.

Thank you to you and all those who provide valuable tips in this forum – if the washer had been newer or the problem simpler I would have found the solution here.

    Thanks Dave and all.

Tonight I printed off the circuit diagram and set to with a multimeter. Unfortunately it’s not looking good…. The display is entirely inoperative – and I can’t get any voltage out of J8 pins 1 and 2, which is supposed to carry 5V to the display. This is with just J6 and J10 connected, which should be carrying neutral and line respectively. The PCB is doing its buzzing thing, so there’s definitely power applied. I also tried with more connectors attached in case there’s some dependency there.

I also noticed a burnt track on the PCB near J12-2 (which goes to the door lock mechanism) but bridging that hasn’t helped.

Any more ideas before I admit defeat? It’s £120-150 for a new PCB, which I could also blow up trying to identify any other faulty parts…

Many thanks for all the help, this is a great forum.

Thanks for your help – yep the main PCB is not a happy bunny.

There’s soot over components in one part of the board, and some burnt tracks – centered I think on the transformer T1. I’ve found the EWM2000EVO basic circuit diagram for a washer dryer, but following the tracks the problem could be with anything connected to J7, J7BIS, or J17. Which seems to be most of the components in the machine. 😕

At 120+ quid for a new PCB, but also diagnosing and fixing what the actual problem is, I’m beginning to think it’s going to be uneconomic to repair, either with my limited skills or by a professional…?

Do you have any other suggestions before I take it to the tip? 🙂

    Thanks for the super-quick response… I tried

    – removing the (mains voltage?) connections at the back of the dryer heater case, trying again – same problem
    – also removing the (mains voltage?) connections at the left hand side of the dryer heater case – same again

There’s now no connections to the dryer heater at all, apart from a couple of low-voltage (sensor?) wires at the front.

The loud buzz when power button is on seems to be coming from the front right side – near the PCB. Is there a transformer or similar in there somewhere?

I am assuming it’s a problem with something mains voltage to so fundamentally fubar it. Not sure what to start pulling wires on next… motor or drain pump underneath I guess…? It will have to wait a couple of days as the MIL is coming to stay (!).
