Yes you sound like you know what you are doing – yes measure the heater element for continuity its more than likely thats the problem.

Auto defrost freezerts are always a problem as the element will always wear out eventually and that ends up with ice build up behind the insulation – you can always tell when this happens as the plastic inside the freezer or more often fridge walls begins to bulge out – its the ice building up and pushing the insulation outwards. As long as the pipes arent cracked it can be fixed if you have the time and put in the effort!

Thermal fuses are easy to check.
You need either an ohmmeter or a digital multimeter in order to test the thermal fuse. You have to adjust your ohmmeter to the Rx1 setting. If you are not familiar with an ohmmeter, this is a device that helps you check whether the thermal fuse is letting electricity flow into the system of your appliance or not.

Allow the probes of your ohmmeter or digital multimeter to touch the edges of the fuse. The device should display a reading on the screen. Read that carefully, and it will help you determine if the fuse is broken or not. There is no need to replace the fuse with a new one if the needle of your ohmmeter changes place to 0. On the other hand, you need to install a new thermal fuse if the needle of the ohmmeter does not move.

Keep in mind that a thermal fuse cannot be adjusted, and if it is found to be faulty or broken, you need to replace it immediately.

Evaporator defrost element maybe burned out – i would recommend anyone always buy a non auto defrost fridge as they can cause fires and are more hassle than they are worth – manual defrosters last a lot longer.

I would have thought you would have got more help on this on here!

Don not let the nay sayers get you down give it a go what have you got to loose?

That is the reason our country is doomed because no one can do anything these days; they just call someone out rather than try and learn something!

Well done to you and your dad – I have the same ethos!

Rubbish if the freezer is still working how is that going to mean its had it.

The back of the fridge has bulged due to ice build up on the cooling plate – yes insulation may be damaged but i bet you will find you can fix it quite easily if you want to – just dig the insulation out and refill it and unblock the drain. Freon line runs from compressor to freezer through back of fridge. water vapor may have frozen on the line creating large lump of ice. Unplug and let thaw for 24 hrs and see if bulge will go away. Unfortunately this may be a sign of low freon pressure/leak. I will bet you defrosted it with the doors closed!

Have you ever worked on those fridges where the drain hose has a rubber none return flap on the lower end of it? Sometimes they can stick and not let the water reach the tray. Then when you stick a rod down them the force is enough to free them and you don’t see a fault.

Let us know how you get on!
