Hi thanks spimps and johnsdad for the replys – sorry for the delay in replying – I was hospitalised with Lymes disease.
I will recheck the resistences, but I measured them several times to make sure. I guess if the readings are correct there is a short somewhere in the motor windings and the compressor needs replacing.
Can anyone suggest suitable engineer(s) near Shrewsbury, Stoke, Crewe or Stafford – Comet want about £75 just for a callout to estimate the work.
Also can anyone give a ballpark idea on the replacement costs

Hi kwatt thanks for that. I have carried out some more tests as spimps suggested.
I should first mention that the compressor had not been moved, and there is no sign of any water ingress on the top where the controls are.
When switched on the door and warning lights have power but the compressor, a Danfoss TLV6K is absolutely silent, and remains so.
I did a limited dismantle & test.
None of the compressor’s 3 terminals appear to be labeled and the meter readings across any two of the three are all near identical at 12.4 ohms (12.3, 12.4, and 12.5 ohms). Resistance from any of the compressor terminals to Earth is infinite.
I did a quick test for power on the control board. The control unit is fed by a 4 core wire (Earth, Blue, Brown, Black) from what I take to be a distribution unit, as wires from this also run inside.
With the thermostat control = 0 (off apparently) the Brown and Black supplying the control board are live, and Blue is dead. All the terminals of the plug supplying power to the compressor are also live. This plug is fed from the control board. Turning the thermostat control ON eg to 5 or 7 makes no difference.
I have’nt had time to ponder on this yet (slow thinker). While my knowledge of these systems is quite limited, neither the thermostatic control nor the board behave as I would expect. I would have thought that when the thermostat control was at zero, there whould be no power at the board, or am I missing something – surely iis the neutral that is switched?.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
