    Problem solved; it was indeed in the area of the thermostat, but not the ‘stat’ itself. The wiring loom had been shaken loose over the years & had sagged enough for it to rub on the edge of the belt which had gradually acted like a bandsaw & cut through parts of the loom, starting with one of the wires connected to the ‘stat’. Mending this wire and carefully re-dressing the wiring loom has restored normal operation.

    Is it a ‘true’ thermostat on these i.e. an on/off device or is it a thermistor? And thanks for the quick reply, Nick
