    Thanks for the tip!
    I dont have earth leakage test gear how ever I pulled and insulated the main oven heating element connections and then tried the grill.
    BINGO the thermostat regulated that nicely! and it even worked (taking the neon lamp out) on the oven setting still warm from the grill.
    Visual inspection showed one end of the element looking pretty suspect.
    Also the fault occurred when using the oven function.
    I will order up an new element. already have the old one out.
    Many many thanks for your help and fast response I am very impressed.
    Came close to throwing it away and buying a new one which seems such a waste. I wonder how many four or five year old ovens are sitting in dumps in similar condition?
    Slight down side is I will have to start cooking again!

    Wired exactly the same as the one it replaced and still has the exact same problem thermostat clicks (indicating the temp of the oven) but does not regulate it. The orange neon that used to go out when the oven reached temperature now does not – just runs at full power!
