Many thanks I will check each of the items you mention again.

Where the edge connector fits, the PCB has three contacts, a slot, and then a further 6 contacts. T1 is connected thus, pin 1 to 3 (shorted to 2, heat sink to 4, pin 2 “cut”, pin 3 thru R25 to the ATMEL chip (pin5). The associated wires are blk (2) brown (3) yellow (4).
Black wire to power switch (live)
Brown wire to water reservoir
Yellow wire to motor
The motor continuity seemed fine but closer inspection suggests it may be a short – I’ll take the back off and investigate further.
