Which leads me to the one question that perhaps should have been asked so that correct advice can be given, what detergent are you using?

Also, what sort of laundry are you doing, is it stuff for gym use and the likes?

If you’ve run a hot wash with detergent and no laundry it’s effectively what’s called a maintenance wash, more info from the link.

Often that can make the smell worse before it gets better, especially of there is a considerable build up which is also the case when you use products to clean it away such as Affresh or Smelly Washer both of which will solve the problem but will also cost a bit of money. It is a known and common issue with front loaders often through people misunderstanding the use of modern machines and detergents as the technologies in both have moved on apace and changed over the years.

Thanks Kwatt – that’s v useful to learn.

I was using Fairy non-bio (didn’t dare risk my eco-balls as didn’t think they’d work as Fairy wasn’t working well), but I am now using Aerial Bio on maintenance and some heavy soiled washes.

It’s on everyday washes that I’m noticing it. Fella’s not especially smelly ( 😆 ) but his t-shirts were coming out with an ‘underarm’ smell still on them. This never happened in our last flat with our cheap and cheerful hotpoint, so I’m certain it’s the machine. Also, putting in a white flannel which had been used to wipe a chocolatey toddler’s face, and seeing it wasn’t coming out clean.

Stuff comes out smelling of detergent, but underneath that, it doesn’t smell quite clean, if you see what I mean.

The machine is level, the filter has been cleaned out and the drawer / jets ahve been thoroughly cleaned.

The Affresh looks good – is it as good as the more expensive one? Definitely sounds worth a go before calling Miele engineers out.

Thank you for all the advice. Following further advice from Miele we have cleaned the jets (little sprays above the drawer) and run it through twice at 95° with biological powder.

This has improved the smell a little but we still have two problems:

    1. Clothes come out smelling a bit cleaner but must still have bacteria on them as after 1/2 an hour of my OH wearing a T-shirt, it smells! He doesn’t having just showered so it’s like body heat is ‘activating’ the smells / bacteria which the washing machine has failed to remove 😥

    2. The fab con part of the drawer is still full of water after every wash and needs to be emptied into the sink before we can use it. I’m less bothered about this than the smell (see above) but mention it in case it helps someone know what this is!

Our landlord reckons that the machine is fine, that every drawer gets full of water and the clothes smell alright – but they really don’t. So we’ve said that as it seems subjective, we’ll pay the engineer callout fee – so before we have to do that I’m hoping that someone will have some clever suggestion that could solve my problems!

Thanks iadom. That article was interesting – although I think I’m doing everything right (apart from not knowing about maintenance washes 😳 ). Everything seems clean in the drawer and the bit where the drawer goes. I’ve just put it on with soda crystals at 95 degrees in the hope that might help. But because the water’s not draining from the tray I suspect there’s more to it than that….
