ParticipantThis is spooky – I came on here to post almost the same question. Yesterday my Bosch oven (not sure of the model but I’ll check when I get home tonight) did much the same but without the loud pop. It was about 2 hrs into a 2 hour, 10 munite roast when it popped the main kitchen RCD.
Switching the oven off allowed the breaker to be reset, and then (because I assumed it was a temporary overload due to using the microwave, kettle and a few other current-hogs at the same time) I turned it back on. I ran fine for another few minutes and then the breaker tripped again. Switched the oven off and reset the breaker, but this time as soon as I turned the oven back on the breaker tripped. Fortunately there was enough hat in the oven to finish the roast (let’s get priorities right here!).
Observations:
The oven would power-up normally when the breaker was reset, and the clock and cabinet cooling fan ran normally. I suspect that the breaker was tripped when the thermostat switched the heater elements on.From the previous post I gather that these symptoms could indicate a failed heater element – is there any way to tell which one? (the oven was in “fan cook” mode at the time, but I don’t know which element this uses).
Could these symptoms come from any other failure such as the main oven internal fan? Is there any way to isolate the fault using simple equipment? I have DVMs and even a cope of oscilloscopes, but no HV insulation tester to hand – would trying different combinations of settings (upper and lower elements etc) be helpful in diagnosing anything?
If it is the element how easy are they to change? Does it need any special tools, and would it need anything else to be changed at the same time (gaskets, seals etc)?
Thanks in advance,

ParticipantRe: Bosch “auto defrost” doesn’t!
Penguin45 you are a true prince amongst men!
I inspected the door seal and found it was distorted/not seating in two places (by vaseline test). Replaced the seal and it’s back to its old chilly self. Problem solved.
You will have my undying gratitute for all eternity or the next few days (whichever happens first) [offer subject to status, terms and conditions may apply – this most certainly does affect your statutory rights].
I’m a military aircraft design engineer by trade, so if you ever have any fast-jet flight control systems that are giving trouble drop me a line so that I can return the favour.

Thanks for that – I suspected it might be the case, but I thought it was worth asking the question.
