A spot on diagnosis by Penguin45. 2 screws to remove the top. Fan motor staring me in the face. Seized – quick turn of the pulley and its free.

Until tomorrow all I can say is I got “no” in reply to “any other noises?”.
I must say your question fits the circumstances very well. An initial visit with mulimeter the best option?
I should have said that my mother has no confidence in domestic appliance engineers – too much watching of these ripping the customer off TV documentaries combined with replacing her 30 month old fridge freezer as “not worth repairing” and without knowing this I then say “had a lucky escape with our Bosch fridge freezer last week it just needed a new thermostat”
