Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

Well the bad news is the maximum width is 925mm due to the bloody boiler. 😥
I think with the room I have a ‘proper’ american freezer is a none starter, I haven’t got a kitchern likely to be shown on MTV Cribs. 😉
I’m a bit disappointed with the Whirlpool which cost £935 just over 5 years ago, I haven’t spent a penny on warenties or service calls in that time but I still think it should have performed better, it still does the job of keeping beer cold and Vodka colder but the clicking is becoming more annoying. I can live with the lack of ice making, ice cube trays are considerably cheaper than a service call. 😉
Might look at alternatives to the ‘American style’ but to be honest the thought of having to bend down to get the beers after years of it being at eye level doesn’t sound good.
The sad thing is, how it looks is just about as important to how it works to me, sorry. 😳

Take the point about freezer space, never really had an issue with the space in the Whirlpool but then being a single bloke it usually only holds a few Pizzas and a botle of Vodka. 😉
But looking at the new models they do seem to have even less space than mine if you spec the ice/water bit. (which I no longer want)

So…..do I get the measurements and look for a more premium brand fridge and seperate freezer that just happen to stand next to each other…. 8)

I think size is going to be my limiting factor here, front to back I can’t excede much more than 660mm for the main body of the unit, side to side I’m a little more flexible but I doubt I’ve got more than 1000mm

Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

Interestesting article on ‘price’, basically what I was saying earlier by buying 3 cheap or one quality. 😉
But it’s really a bit of a gamble, I wouldn’t recommend an extended warrenty to anyone (just my personal view) seeing people buy a £300 warrenty on a £200 item just seems a little daft to me. :rolls:
The danger is buying ‘Quality’ and just out of a 3 year warrenty it breaks down and costs hundreds to fix.
Looks like a trip to a more ‘quality’ outlet is in order to gauge the price differences and do the maths, or just live with the annoying click from the Whirlpool for another year or 2 or until it actually stops making food cold and NEEDS replacing. 😀

You’re begining to win me round, especially as I hate shopping for these type of products, buying a new Samsung every 4 years doesn’t sound as nice as fitting and forgeting an expensive unit, it’s just a mind field to the untrained eye, one silver box looks very much like another.
I bought the Whirlpool from a retailer that did sell some of the top line stuff and in some cases you could see were ther money had gone but not in all, I’d hate the idea of spending £2k on a unit and something going wrong every 4 years that costs £100 to put right. :rolls:
At that point finacially it would better to scrap a Samsung every 4 years, it’s a wonderfull enviromentally aware world we now live in isn’t it.
And in some case I agree with an earlier post with regard to ‘fit for purpose’ regardless of price if a unit is sold to do a job it should be capable of doing it for a ‘resonable’ length of time.
The ‘it’s cheap what do you expect’ line doesn’t really cut it. :rolls:

Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

It does appear to me, as a casual whitegood consumer that quality of just about everything has taken a turn for the worse, and I’d guess it is cost taking a priority over quality.
My parents freezer is well over 20 years old, I don’t even know the make but it is nothing special it does’t even have a logo on the front it’s just a big metalic brown front and it has never had any issues. Me, I buy a brand I think is going to be of respectable quality ‘ Whirlpool’ and within 4 years it’s beyond ecomical repair. :rolls:
I’ve had the same issue with TV’s I have a 17 year old CRT TV that is still perfect, my 3 year old Plasma is about to be replaced. :rolls:

They just don’t make things like they used to….god I sound old. 😆

Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

So basically everything in the retail park stores is pants, which actually backs up what the boy in Currys said. 😆
He actually said all electrical stuff these days has a life of a few years, great sales pitch, but I guess thats the price you pay for everything being made in China for buttons.
So unless I’m spending upwards of £1.5k on something to keep my beer cold and my pizza’s frozzen I’m going to be replacing it every 4 years if I’m lucky.
So doing the maths I can get 10 years service out of 2 or 3 ‘cheap’ units or 1 expensive unit. :rolls:

At least Samsung seem to have done the decent thing at some point and accepted a design fault and done a free upgrade unlike the unfit for purpose rubbish that is the Whirlpool. 😯

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Hello all, just found this forum while seraching for fixes for my….

    S20B RBB20 – A/G
    Serial No: 110331021303

I’ve got by the sounds of it the usual load of Whirlpool issues, started with the clicking noise when making ice, progressed to clicking every 1/2 an hour or so all the time, pulsing water, and now the ice maker has stopped making ice.

I thought I had found some PCB’s going cheap as that seems to be the fix but the seller has said they will only be compatible if my fridge/freezer has a filter and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t so I’m reluctant to blow £100+ on these items if they don’t work.

    So…….
any idea on a part number of the PCB I need or if there is a cheap capacitor fix, not sure if I’m up to the job of doing it but should be able to remove it and get a electrical expert to do the soldering if I think it’s beyond me.

Can’t really believe Whirlpool can get away with this, it should be a free recall type fix, my boiler had an issue a few years ago and after seeing the company get a slating on Watchdog they upgraded all the faulty boilers free of charge if you contacted them.

    Steve
