Yes, I think so. When I removed the existing Triac I damaged the board a bit as it lifted up the pad that the Triac gate leg sat on.
I tried to repair this with silver conductive paint, but wasn’t sure exactly where it was supposed to connect to so I might have messed things up.

Anyway, have ordered the JL dryer with a 5 year warranty.

Thanks for your help and advice Martin.

Fearing the worst, I have also been looking at new dryer options. Ours gets a lot of use, probably average 1.7 loads per day 😯 . I was thinking a heat pump dryer might pay for itself fairly quickly, but not sure how reliable they are as there is another thing to go wrong with them (thinking of air con topups on cars, etc).

However, just seen John Lewis have a “Black Friday” special today only with £150 off their JLTDH17 model. This makes it £450 for an 8Kg heat pump dryer. I’m thinking maybe this is too good a deal to ignore, especially if I’m looking at £150 for a motor or PCB to keep the current one going.

I guess this is another Electrolux model underneath. £60 to top up the warranty to 5 years. The more I think about it the more I’m talking myself into it rather than spend rest of today kneeling beside the existing one scratching my head 😀

    A bit more information –

I ran the test programs and the drum turns fine on the setting 4 – ie anticlockwise rotation, but on 3 it just makes a clunk as if it is starting to turn but doesn’t and then repeats this every second or so.

Would this suggest more the motor or PCB ?

Could I swap the wires to the motor to check if this reverses the behaviour (i.e. works on program 3 but not on 4) ?

    OK thanks again.

Just watched it now and it stopped in front of me. The drum had been turning one way then didn’t turn the other way, paused a bit and then started flashing E50 (but bizarrely not opening the door) so I am not thinking maybe it is the capacitor after all. The one I replaced it with was a 8uf from Maplin, but perhaps it’s a bit duff.

    Hi Martin,
Thanks for reply. Yes, it looked quite intact as you say.

As I write now, it’s been running happily for the past 2.5 hrs so it’s quite puzzling.

If I understand what you’re saying about the motor it’s that there is a thermal cut out which might trip and then reset when it cools. The motor resistance would be infinite whilst the cut out was tripped?

Will be hard to measure that I guess.

Not sure how likely that would be though as when the fault occurs, it will go again immediately just by turning the selector off and on again. So unless the thermal trip is only happening for a really short time I’m not sure.

    thanks for help anyway !
