I managed to take a few photos and I think you are correct. I think my son has stretched the spring (see photos) and there is wear on the tabs that anchor the tensioners allowing to much movement. Looks like new tensioners and spring then. Cheers.

I’ve checked it out and it looks ok, damned PC won’t recognise my USB camera at the moment. It look like this:-
