Re: Tall Larder fridge and matching frost-free freezer

Further to my posting of yesterday I have now had another phone call from AEG, who have ‘reassessed’ my case and are now offering me another new fridge, free of charge this time. This was however after I emailed a national newspaper asking for their advice on the situation. I would therefore recommend to anyone with any similar problems with appliances to pursue the matter rather than accept any offers that they feel are unacceptable. Try the consumer group ‘Which?’ for advice, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or indeed national newspapers for some support when things go wrong.

Re: Tall Larder fridge and matching frost-free freezer

I bought both the tall AEG fridge and matching freezer you mentioned two years ago when I moved house. It was the first time I’d contemplated spending roughly £1000 to get a fridge and freezer. I thought AEG was supposed to be a reliable brand but I’ve had recurrent faults with the fridge since I bought it. After only a few days water was pooling in the reservoir at the back. An engineer replaced the door seal. A few months later the fridge frosted up right up from bottom to top. After numerous visits I thought whatever it was was fixed. However after just under a year the frosting problem has returned. AEG inspected it and decided that it wasn’t worth repairing but want me to pay £221 for a new one. This amounts to around 43{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the purchase price (Sainsburys & Boots.com). I’m not at all happy. I know not every AEG fridge is destined to break down but the one year manufacturer’s guarantee hasn’t really been much use to me as I’m still with a faulty ‘new’ fridge. Consumer’s rights state that you can expect appliances such as these to last 6 years i.e. a reasonable a mount of time so I’m now looking into following that up. We are now using a 10+ year old small, very cheap Beko fridge as back-up. Basically I’m not really convinced anymore that the more money you spend the better the product!
