I would like to offer a belated and much appreciated thanks to John (Brodders) for all his help toward me, and giving his time and knowledge in regard to this thread.
The last time I posted here was before christmas.
I took his advice, and bought the capcitors and relays from Farnell. However, I never fitted them at the time, as I had a full fridge and freezer, and didnt want to gamble on a few bobs worth of food on my soldering skills.
Since then, I have done 2 defrosts, but still hadn’t put the new parts in.I can now say I have done the work (Friday).
I replaced the caps on the back board (all of them this time) and all of the relays.
I also did the repair to the front board, using 2 one micro farads in parallel.Well, what can I say, for the first time in about 3 years, the unit is working like new again.
I know it will take a few weeks to know if the compressor relay has worked, but I have a good feeling about it this time. Fingers crossed ๐
Once again, thanks John, you are a star.

Nope, I haven’t changed anything on it since I bought the relays as per your advice.
All I did was find a setting that stopped the front display from flashing.
Since then (2 weeks now) all has been well.
I have started to hear a noise from the freezer, a sort of clunking noise that sounds to me as if the defrost cycle is now working again, and the fridge is maintaining temperature.October 22, 2009 at 9:18 pm in reply to: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help! #142352Shaun1878

Hi again, sorry I haven’t posted back, but something Brodders said, about the flashing display possibly causing problems on the rear board.
I messed about with the temperature settings, finding one that didn’t cause the flashing on the display.Since I did this, the unit has been operating as it should do.
Although I am of the ‘if it ain’t broke’ mindset, I will change the relays, and the last capacitor on the rear board.
I am simply enjoying having a product that after so long, is finally operating as it should have done all along.
Thanks again John,

May I just say that this thread seems to be going a little off topic.
This thread started because someone had a faulty unit.
33 pages later, and what becomes clear is that Whirlpool clearly had quality issues with these units, as the thread grew.
We then saw the response from the Whirlpool customer service team, which seemed to match their manufacturing facilites attitude towards quality. What happened then was good old community spirit, often found on a forum like this, where people who had knowledge came out and offered an alternative to the ‘dont care’ attitude of the manufacturer.
From what I understand, no one has been electrocuted attempting to repair their fridges from information offered here.
What has happened is people have repaired their units, saved a load of money, saved landfil space, and more pertinently, for me at least, got a great deal of satisfaction from fixing it yourself.I understand that in these times we have to be careful in terms of H&S laws, and the subsequent abulance chasers that follow.
What I don’t understand is the unnecessary negative and picky comments towards the few who are giving their time and knowledge to help total strangers.Come on guys, group hug ๐

Thanks again Brodders.
I was sort of wondering (dreaming) that maybe if the flashing stopped, that this may help :rolls:Nevermind, I have all the bits now, so I am determined to have another go at it later on.
Did you get my PM ?Shaun

is it the orange relay clicking?
If you have replaced C1 and C2 you shouldn’t have any more problems not unless your LED display is flashing and turning the temp control on and off.
I would stick the 6.3 volt in.Brodders, are you saying that the flashing display effects the temp control of the unit ?
As discussed, I tend to think the problem with mine is down to the unit not de-icing the evaporator. It works fine after a defrost, but only lasts 2 weeks tops, before the fridge side is too warm.
I have changed all caps on the rear board, besides C2, which is the 1000ยตF 6.3v, as the one on the board is exactly the same as the one in the repair kit.
I am going to change this tonight hopefully, along with the relays as you suggested. If I change the temp settings on the front of the panel, I can get it to stop flashing, its -21ยฐ, and 4ยฐC that seem to stop it.
Are you suggesting that by stopping the panel flashing, it may hold temp better ?PM coming.

Richard, you will need to buy a de-soldering pump.
This tool sucks up the solder from the pin that are holding the iron to.
Therefore you will have to go around all the pins and remove the solder from each one individually. My last attempt at repairing my fridge/freezer will start tomorrow.
I have bought the bits from Farnell’s as Brodders kindly informed me.One more capacitor, and the relays to replace, and them I’m done.
Or was I done when I bought the thing in the first place ๐

Once again Brodders, thanks for your invaluable information.
I have ordered 2 compressor relays, 4 defrost and ice making relays, and 5 of both types of capacitor.
I did get the 1000ยตF 6.3v capacitor with the kit from the site, but never fitted it, as I expected the electrolytic would still be good.
What do I know :rolls:I will borrow a replacement fridge again, and switch the unit off tonight, ready for the new components to arrive.
Would you mind if I called on you again if I get stuck doing the repair ?
And thank you again for all your help.

Brodders, hopefully you will be reading this sometime soon.
Just to let you know, I also have the flashing light problem on the front.
Although my main concern is having a fridge that will hold temp for at least a month, I would like the ice maker to work too ๐Since I replaced the (4) 0.22 micro Farads, (from the first time too) the clicking stopped from the one of the rear relays. As I have said, I have bought the kit from here, and replaced all, except for the small electrolytic one.
From what I have read, the reason the fridge started getting cold again, was because I defrosted the evaporator, and the compressor started working again.
I now think this has iced up over the last week or so.
What do you think, the de-frost cycle is not happening ?
Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the reply Brodders.
I have checked the motorised baffle, and it is working correctly.
In the time since my first post, I now have a freezer over temp alarm.
The — sign on the front panel.
I thoroughly defrosted the evaporator just over a week ago, and although I havent taken the panel off yet, I fear it has frozen up again ๐กIf this is the case, what would be causing this problem, and how would I fix it ?
Thanks again,

Well, after lurking in this thread for a while, I have eventually bit the bullet and joined in.
I have a S20B-RSS31 A/G, 8586 151 15010 which has had all the symptoms described in this thread.
This lasted for years, and as I never had the water plumbed in, I thought this was just down to that.
Then, I noticed food not lasting as long as expected, so bought a fridge thermometer.
About a month ago, I bought some capacitors from RS, and replaced the (4) 0.22 micro Farad Caps on the rear board.
This change never really had any effect, so just over a week ago, I bought the rear board repair kit from the site shop.
I borrowed in a temp freezer, and left the unit switched off for 24 hours.
I then changed all the caps from the new kit, apart from the only electrolytic one on the board.
Bingo, all good…………for about a week.
I now have a rising temp in the fridge, about 9 degrees, and also no longer here the compressor running, well, I do sometimes, but it is very faint, as compared to straight after the last repair.
Any ideas anyone. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Shaun -
