ParticipantRe: Whirlpool S20DRSS33-A/G Defrost Problem
Just to say that a month on after replacing the main PCB everything is working fine. A strange buzzing noise that was also occurring periodically has also stopped. Replacing the board is a pretty easy task if you are contemplating it – anyone with average DIY skills will be able to do it. It’s a case of removing the lower back panel and then the plastic box housing the board is on the right as you look at the unit. Just make sure you power the unit off first.

Many thanks for all your help Steve. I’ll post back when I finally get it sorted in case it helps someone else.

Thanks Steve – I’ll get busy.
If it is the main PCB is http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/481221778217-whirlpool-us-fridge-freezer-rear-control-pcb the one you are referring to, as I have an idea there are a few PCBs in there? It was a while ago since I replaced the capacitors and whilst it looks familiar it would be nice to know for sure.

Many thanks for that Steve. Anything on the PCB I can have a go at fixing? I’ve already replaced the capacitors with the kit bought from this site.
Does the fact that I’ve replaced the capacitors change your advice at all? Does this increase the likelihood that the thermostat is faulty?

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool PCB(?) Box Buzzing
Have fitted all the capacitors and not only is my Whirpool now acting normally but my ice maker is now working again! I’ve posted an update here: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/forumsphpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=41632..
Many thanks K for your help on this one!

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool Ice Maker Broken
Just in case it helps anyone else, after two years of filling my ice bucket with supermarket bought ice I have a happy ending to this story. My Whirlpool started making strange noises and the display started acting odd, and another posting to this forum very quickly pinpointed the main circuit board as the likely culprit. To cut a longish story short, this site sells a replacement board for about £140 which I reckon most people with standard DIY skills could fit. However, for the only slightly more adventurous it also sells a £10 bag of replacement capacitors (these are usually the duff components). I bought these (next day delivery – brilliant!) and over the weekend got to work with a borrowed soldering iron and some YouTube videos. An hour’s work saw the job done, and not only is the Whirlpool no longer misbehaving the ice maker is fixed as well!
If anyone else is in the same boat I would urge them to give this a go if they have a few DIY skills. The only ‘biggie’ is to make sure that the round capacitor is fitted the right way (it has polarity) by ensuring that the negative stripe is opposite the +ve marking on the board. Many thanks to ‘K’ on this forum for pointing me in the right direction!

Thanks K! I see that there is a £10 repair kit so I might as well try that first. It’s about time I learned how to solder…

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool PCB(?) Box Buzzing
Many thanks for your reply K! Are there any special skills required to fit this unit, or is just a plug and play type component?
Other odd symptoms have started to appear (such as the freezer display showing two horizontal bars at the same time as the warning buzzer sounding, which will only reset after several minutes of being turned off at the mains) so I’m seriously considering changing this PCB, although like you say it’s not cheap.
Is this PCB likely to be the only failing piece of electronics or do other components tend to fail at the same time?

If anyone has any thoughts about this I’d be grateful.
