Dales-Electronic wrote:I have every sympathy for the loss of your van but am alittle annoyed at your response. I offered you an opportunity to get work together with a telephone number and my recommendation. It seemed that you had work offered by Ian and decided not to tell him you were having problems. Whilst you may be an excellent engineer (as most of us are on this forum) you communication skills with the company who was offering you work left something to be desired. I am pleased that you have managed to sort something out and wish you the best of luck recovering you vehicle.
My response was based on my knowledge of the sitiuation, my previous van broke down now I either repaired it my self or went and bought another vehicle to save time ….which I did , so I bought the vehicle and bought it home, fitted it out and put all my tools ,paperwork, maps, left a message with the insures on an answer machine as it was a sunday, woke the monday ready for work and no Van …..1 day ! let alone £2,000 of tools and refridge equipment that I have had to replace …..all takes time not to mention money and at 52 I dont need it , …….no chance of finding that Vehicle round here (Nottingham) , anyway , i’m drawing a line under this too , shit happens in life and we all have to take it …..All I wanted to do was work as I enjoy my work

We all try to help each other out on this forum but one of the major problems with sub contracting work out is that the engineer must be committed as much to your business as to his own. Simply, if you don’t want to commit, dont take on the work.
was a bit below the belt, I’m a damn good engineer and dont let people down , but how do I account for toe-rags that destroy and nick other peoples property….what do I do ? keep 3 vans in tow ? with 3 sets of toolboxes ? or shall I sleep in the van ? anyway I’m back with ian and I am grateful for the work …

Part no 66883 – Torx 40 Impact bit about 1.29 each either direct from Draper or order from any Draper stockist. Even if you don’t use it with the impact driver put the 1/2 SD impact head on your ratchett. I found best way is to either heat nut first or give the nut a bit of a welly and then tap the bit into the nut first. I’ve tried everything before and these are probably the best cost option. At one stage I was doing 2-3 Inde spider changes a day. Even with this bit they do occasionaly break but not that often.
Steve 😀
yup thats what I use and always does the job ! (if your hand dont get sliced on side cabinet ) ! hehe ,

I can picture it now, old shops with wire mesh in the windows. Hyson Green down the bottom as well as Gregory Boulevard & Lenton Boulevard. Daughter had a student flat opposite the entrance to Asda and the alleyway would be littered with needles & condoms. Area by the Goose fair park & ride is a bit tidier now though since the trams were added.

Hi iadom, I can see your inference but I too go to bed at 9 pm if i i’m not working , the reason ? well try getting some bluddy sleep at 2 am when kids an students are still partying ? if its not that its the flippin police or ambulance sirens going, …..then do a days work ? with oh can I pay you later or oh dont see to have enough money, the other classic is a washer for £60 and can you knock a bit off cos I only got £50? I’m beginning to wonder of even my marbles ?

That surprises me, are you doing all your work in Hyson Green or St Annes?
What’s wrong with West Bridgford, Gamston, Woolaton, even Arnold & Sherwood?
I like Nottingham, lots of trees & parks, 1st class tram system, Selectadisc (best record store I’ve ever been in), good restaurants in Mansfield Road, brilliant nightlife. Bit dodgy in some places, and high crime rate. No different than anywhere else.
Not up north though, East Midlands. Even York is less than half way up the U.K.
You will get used to it Duck.

I have to agree….my patch is probably one of the most affluent in the country and I’ve met numerous seriously wealthy customers (the one’s with titles, country estates and house/boats all around the world) and they generally are some of the nicest people you could meet. The customers who have made a million or two themselves tend to be the more unpleasant ones. A sweeping generalisation maybe, and there are always exceptions but it’s still an abiding impression i’m left with.

well now thats weird ? I was born in Bethnal green and I too worked at Hoover, but I got on better with the people of say our our kind ? at least we all knew where we stood ? although I am educated with all the bits of paper anyone needs, I only have to open my mouth up here …an its….ohhh you dont come from round here do you ….an everyone says to me “eh duck ” wos that all about ? I’ve been civil to most round here and next door to me I have a pentecostal church , now dont laugh but they are the nicest people I’ve met here , I cant understand half of them but who cares at least they are polite and pay ? the pastor even invites me for coffee an biscuits in the afternoons ! …..as if I got time !!! but he even asked us to join in his sing song ….and i must admit it was impressive , well we got free sarnis afterwards ! then we have the other side ? …oh dear ….but as penguin said I’m new to the area , plus I’m just getting used to the local xxxxxxs who aint comin back in my shop….give me the south anyday !

Chris.
TBH, I didnt think of it like that, I was kinda getting paranoid that it was the area, mind you it is very cosmopolitan shall we say , and what gets frustrating is half cant tell you the make of their machine so they make something up so I waste my time and they get angry , maybe its taking time to weed these nutters out but then I always wonder if they would have turned out to be decent customers, so far I think I have binned more nutters than collected decent customers and right now that dosent help because of school hols and all the students here in notts have gone till sept, so in consequence some nights I work till midnight to keep the business afloat at the moment , thanks for your comments so far anyway

we are led to believe the customer is always right ? from my point of view they think they are the only ones in life and we are supposed to dance to their tune ? as for me I like to help people out wherever I can because I enjoy engineering , i enjoy the shop life but it seems some customers up here want to take the proverbial , now i’m not kidding but in some customers it smacks to me of buy it on a friday and get ya money back on a monday when they realise they cant afford it ? maybe i’m working the wrong area ? maybe they sell washing machines on the moon ? beam me up scotty !!!!!
