I had to succumb to the Whirlpool extended warranty offer @£200 since I knew it was the board that needed replacing and all the quotes I’d had from other sources couldn’t beat that and the machine would be covered for a further 12 months.
The engineer came in December simply opened the fridge door and said ‘I’ll order both boards but there are none in stock it will be a month’
Yesterday he came back and replaced both boards. Now I keep checking its still on because its so quiet !
The Whirlpool repair + warranty isn’t too bad as the money gets deducted direct debit over 10 months which helps my post Christmas finances considerably and looking at the prices quoted for replacement boards having both of them replaced for £20 per month sounds like a bargain.
I did contact BBC Watchdog as a previous post suggests just in case other people were doing the same, doubt they’ll look it the issue unless they have hundreds of complaints.
The engineer left me the 2 old boards …. what and where exactly are the capacitors ?

I didn’t get any reply to my email to Whirlpool customer services – so 20 days later I kicked up a big fuss on the phone ……… only thing I achieved was to get a response to the email – as follows :-
I am sorry to hear that your fridge freezer is not operating correctly. Unfortunately I have been unable to contact you by telephone.
I regret that for safety reasons we are limited in the technical information that we can provide to our consumers and we cannot give a diagnosis or confirm a part failure without prior inspection from a qualified technician. We have however spoken to our Technical Department and I can confirm that we have no inherent problems with any of our cooling and freezing products.
With due regard for the facts as outlined, I can only advise that you contact our service providers on 0870 6008989, option 1 and they will arrange for an engineer to visit who can carry out a full inspection on the unit.
I trust that this problem will be satisfactorily resolved and I offer my apologies for any inconvenience caused to you.
I’m assuming she means full inspection at my expense

I have today spent 90+ minutes on the phone going around in supposed ‘customer care’ circles ………. at least now I know why they call themselves Whirlpool !
Makes no diff which number you choose off the menu all anyone wants to do is send you an engineer (at your own cost) or sell you extended warranty. Nobody is interested in listening to a complaint I’ve had to resort to sending an email through their website, there wasn’t an option that fitted the criteria to send it to so I sent it to ‘other’ which I’m certain is Whirlpool speak for complaints Dept. Will post their response if I get one.
I realise after reading this forum that I’m going to have to pay through the nose to get my problem sorted or be without refrigeration !
Apart from excessive spares costs extended warranty appears to be excessive also – @£200 per year I could buy a new appliance every 3 !!!Strongbow24

Forgot to add ……… knocking on the front door ………. my front door is glass and people tend to tap on it with their knuckles and that’s what I thought the noise was when I first heard it ……. somebody insistently rapping on the pane. I suppose its more like a loud clicking – I need it to make the noise again so that I can analyse it and of course because I want it to do it …….. it hasn’t 😉

OMG !!!
You weren’t kidding about bedtime reading ………. I’m falling asleep 😆After reading that thread which I didn’t think applied to my problem but maybe an indication of what my machine will do next, I have decided to do the following:-
a) Move some stuff out of the freezer to my Aunt who has room in hers and basically run my stock down to zero and turn the offending article off before it starts misbehaving with temperatures.
b) Phone Whirlpool – probably won’t gain anything but nothing ventured ….. seems a couple of people had good results, will work on strategy of approach to that overnight 😉
c) Might have a go at replacing those capacitors ……. frightening prospect but then so was replacing components in my pc the first time I did it. I will at least have a probe remove the box and take a look
What damage can I do ? …… if I have a go at the soldering what’s the worst case scenario ?
If the machine simply doesn’t work and I would need a new board I haven’t lost anything ……. but if it blows up that’s a different matter altogether 😆Thank you both so much sparing some time on my problem 🙂
