Many thanks. Managed to find a GE model that is 189cm tall. Hard to get as is now discontinued but is being installed today.

Thanks – have been looking at the GE models. Nice, trouble finding one that is bigger than 1m80 – found some old references to taller ones but nothing with on-line stores…still looking.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!
Well after fixing the rear board I have another failure. This time the water dispenser stopped working and then the temp went down so more wasted food!
Last resort time – have managed to get the front PCB out of the appliance (a Smeg branded PITA). From descriptions, it seems Smeg may have some different capacitors on their board – certainly the access to it is different to the regular Whirlpool.
Anyway – I am trying to source some replacement capacitors, I’ve found some but am struggling to find:
1) 3 x 250v 1.70 MKP .68/10 axial type
2) 1 x 250v 1.70 MKP .33/10 axial type
3) 4 x 250 3u – not much writing on these but they are squarish blocks about 1cm in size. guessing 3uf 250v
Can’t seem to find at the usual places (maplin/rs/bobsbitsbox) so any ideas please let me know. Also, if there is a way to test capacitors using a multimeter or similar that would be helpful – clearly I’m not an electrician but I can use a soldering iron 🙂Thanks

Well, I can confirm that the SMEG has the same PCB in the back – just replaced the 7 capacitors and added an extra one to the C1 – powered up OK so will see if it is working fully in a few hours.
Thanks for all the info 😀

Thanks – have done some more checking and it looks like this is the same problem as the Whirlpool problem. I think the branding is different but the components seem to be the same.

Hi All – great thread! I have a smeg SRA20x1 that has the same problems:
freezer alarm comes on and display is “–“
clicking noise from dispenser area
today the warning triangle came on and the freezer was obviously below tempI used to have a Whirlpool and guess what – when is started to have the same type of faults I insisted on an exchange as it took 2 months to get it partially repaired. To avoid the same problems I got a different brand – Smeg. When I first opened the door I was a bit sad when I saw it looked exactly the same – so I guess the same problems with the smeg indicate the same type of solution.
I have ordered the caps but if someone out there can confirm – or otherwise – that this is the same type of PCB etc that would be helpful.
Thanks

Massive thanks to you guys – dryer is operational again! It is great to have both learnt and saved money! I’ll now move onto replacing the rubber seal on the washing machine…..

Hi – my heater unit has arrived. Am about to fit today so if someone can answer the question in the previous post re the green and white connectors that would be really helpful.
Thanks

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWZ121 Dryer – no heat
Ah – just realised somthing else! Where the electricity cable enters the dryer, there is a white component (capacitor?) and I failed to note which way the central 2 wires were connected (one has a green end and the other a white end). I’ll try and include an image here:

I’m guessing the way the two wires are connected is important as they have different coloured ends. Can’t see any markings to indicate polarity? Any ideas – apart from going 50:50???

Many thanks – part ordered. Much cheaper than a new dryer which was the original plan- let’s see if it lasts another 8 years

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWZ121 Dryer – no heat
OK, so here’s the results of the testing:
continuity – heater
unplugged one of the wires from a heater terminals and used my multimeter to test for continuity – no beep. To check the meter, reconnected the wire and tested again – this time the meter beeped so I guess that is working. If the heater should have a continuous circuit through it then does this mean the heater is broken?
Thermostats
In the absence of any writing, I’m guessing that the two white plastic components that are connected with a brown wire going in and a black wire going out (which is then connected to the heater) are the thermostats. After disconnecting a wire from each of these – they both tested OK for continuity.Does it look like the heater/heating element is the problem here?
Thanks

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWZ121 Dryer – no heat
HI again – how do I test of the thermostat has failed?

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool AWZ121 Dryer – no heat
Thanks Penguin, will do that. To test these components am I simply looking for continuity (to start with) across the terminals connecting into the component?

Doh – just searched properly and found this:

will check out the thermostat at the front. Any suggestions for easy diagnostics appreciated. I have a multimeter (though not much experience with it apart from continuity testing).
