Thanks for your reply. You are right, it would be criminal to scrap this machine with such a small fault, however I think you missed the phrase “Mother-In-Law”.
I can get a half price Samsung from Argos for £200, which should do (are they any good?).
I still object to paying around £80 for a controller to rectify a faulty EPROM. This should not need replacing as it is by definition programmable, the next logical step is to replace the whole machine, hence the Hotpoint gets binned.
With reference to useful sayings:
You only get what you pay for, but with Hotpoint you carry on paying despite the free parts.
In my experience it is lager rather than pride that comes before a fall.
I do not need to cut off my nose to spite my face, it is fairly spiteful already.
