Slightly enthusiastic with the 12 years.. it was in fact 2002, so nearer 9 years old, but still pretty good going!

The majority do yes, and many where the internal insulation breaks down and therefore give a dead short to earth. If you haven’t been using salt in the water softener, by the way, then chances are the heater will quickly fail. 🙁

I have used salt for the entire life of the unit, but I had a weird scenario about 9 months ago whereby I realised that I hadn’t changed the salt for a fair while, but the salt light never came on. Turned out that the salt HAD run out but had left weird, rock hard crystals of some kind (salt or some by-product of broken-down salt(?)) behind, which were fooling the sensor into thinking there was salt. I cleared it by tipping some boiling hot water from the kettle in there to clear away all the crud, and as soon as I did that the light came on. So I could have been running it without sufficient salt for a while and thus contributed to a possible premature failure.
But I have to say that a first failure in 12-15 years is very impressive (bought it late 90s).
Anyway, will report back once I have removed the heater.

Excellent chaps! I appreciate the replies.
Will now have to wait until work goes quiet before carrying on with it (or until the crockery hits the ceiling, whichever comes first) but will post back with the next chapter.
Can I just use the formula R = (V x V) / P where V is the voltage powering the element, P is the power the element uses in watts and R is the resistance – to measure the IWH?
If yes, then does anyone know the wattage of the IWH so that I can measure the ohms across it?
Do most of them just go open circuit anyway?

DOH! Well it might help if I checked the parts store on here! :rolls: Sorry about that! I just thought it was a forum.. The post to another site was a completely innocent mistake and I meant no malice by it, so apologies once again.
Only thing is when I check the three water heaters listed for Bosch, my model dishwasher isn’t shown (but very close – SGS43A42GB/01 – mine is SGS43A32UK/01).
Which of the 3 would I need to order?

lol.. so I assume from that answer there is a maintenance hatch/panel/plate underneath somewhere so obtain access to the gubbins? I had a quick look from the lower-side and decided to ‘come back later for another look..’ a la crossword.
If I do a search for the part, I get varying results from varying websites but I’m not really sure where to order it from. espares.co.uk are coming in at 79.99 (not sure if right part though) which seems to be pretty cheap.. anyone used them on here? Seems to vary anywhere up to around the 105 quid mark. Failing that, anyone else to try?
Finally, how many ohms should read across the terminals of the IWH? I assume that open circuit indicates it being faulty? Just wanna make absolutely sure it’s defective before shelling out best part of a hundred nicker!
