ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner
Just an update, stuck another washer on the shaft to move the drum away from the back panel, now working, no scraping and can take a full load.
strange but true.
I now have a spare belt, probably the next repair..
Hopefully get another few months or years out it yet….
Thanks to anyone who helped out with this thread.thegooddr
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner
Been reading an old post regarding hotpoint dryers and scraping noises, it appears dryers of this sort of age were notorious for this fault, and after a few failed mods hotpoint eventually changed the design of the drum.
Over the years of it being insured and even having an engineer out for the scraping noise on a previous occasion we were never informed of any mods or recalls.
I think a new drum is out of the question for my dryer due to its age and probably other things going wrong with it in future. But I may try the washers on the inside of the rear shaft. I fitted the one that came with the kit but I will maybe stick another one or two in.thegooddr

Hi, that was the first thing I replaced, rear bearing andfront wear pads. The only thing I never done was the felt seals.
the drum itself is much sturdier than before they were done as in no lift but there seems to be a lot of front to back play.thegooddr

Here are 2 photos of the drum position. Any ideas as to why it is rubbing at the back?

Goin to end up throwing it out the window.
Had it on just now and now its started with the metal on metal rubbing noise again.
when I had it in bits I did notice the were markings on the inside of the back panel that may have been cased by the drum rubbing. But I thought this was caused by the drum dropping due to bearing failure.
Is there any reason why the drum would come into contact with the casing.
Looking from the top down you can see quite a bit of the front felt seal as if it may not be located properly.
I will take a pic when my phone charges up.

The motor doesnt stop when I put my hand on the drum. The drum stopped and the belt kept going.

Just put a load inand was slipping right away, I can turn the drum by hand from inside quite easily, not like a washing machine but not too difficult.
Got a belt coming, may be the next step.thegooddr

Hi, the belt was def slipping on the drum. Its on just now with half a load.
will see how it goes and maybe up the weight on the next load. If the capacitor was needing replaced wouldnt the motor just whine and not turn as the load would be too much for it.thegooddr
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner
Here a pic of the belt. Ive done one load, split into 3 and now I have a little more stuff in and its turning just now.
When I had it open to take the picture I switched it on and basically the weight of my hand on the drum was enough to make the belt slip.
could it be binding on the new wear pads I fitted at the front of the machine?thegooddr
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner
The way I fitted the belt over the new pulley was to put the back bolt in first then force the pulley down until the metal clip slotted into the hole in the motor. Didnt really take much effort but I do think its the right way.. when the dryer is switched on empty it spins no problem but with a load in the belt just slips round the drum. The dryer is around 7 years old and is on most days 2 or 3 times.
Thanks again.thegooddr

Fitted the new jockey today, drum still wont turn under full load.
Have now ordered a new belt, which means another stripdown, (from the front this time?)
Getting slightly peed off as the dryer was actually working before I started, although it was making a grinding noise.
Fingers crossed the belt solves all.thegooddr

Cheers, hopefully it wont break anytime soon.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD80 belt tensioner
Hi, the question about the belt is for future reference as when I had the drum out today I noticed a few cracks in the rubber.
Yeah I removed the jockey wheel with aid of a ratchet spanner, never needed to move much to get it. Probably be a bit more difficult to get back on that way though.
Thanks for the reply.thegooddr

Thanks, will get one asap. Dryer very busy in our house.
Btw, how do you remove the belt from around the motor shaft? -
