    I did all the work by pulling the unit out from under the worktop, undoing the various screws that hold on a small front panel (below the door) and the LHS side panel. THis gave sufficient access.

    Spot on!
    Your advice was the confidence I needed to dig a bit deeper. I never found a locking screw and the pump was on the LHS but never mind, a very firm twist and the whole assembly came off the sump. Cleaned the impellor and surfaces – didn’t find anything substantial. A small piece of eggshell was the firmest bit of debris I found. I think I was expecting a chicken bone or something equally big. Anyway, ran the pump fine before refitting. Ran fine after refitting, ran the short rinse cycle and it all drained away. Problem solved (I think) and wiser about my machine.
