finally got round to getting it looked at by an engineer, had him baffled for a while as all the parts tested fine, stripped the backplate off the unit and found bare wire showing on one of the connectors for the top element where the cable had been folded to run up the casing and was a bit close for contact. when the oven is used the backplate distorts with the heat and touches the bare wires & tripped the main rcd. replaced spade connector and bet the connector away from casing & problem solved.
