You were spot on with the diagnosis kiwi, as you sudgested the switch was corroded and had jammed in the on position. As a temporary fix I hit it with some contact cleaner and compressed air which breathed a bit of life back into it. Being somewhat familiar with Omron switchgear and relays I have ordered the switch only from our local Middy’s rather than a genuine F&P part in the hope this may be a little cheaper since I was quoted about $5 for the switch itself. Although I could not get the exact same switch which was a V-6-2C4 I was able to get a similar one a V-15-1C25 which is identical except that it is rated at 15 amps rather than 6 amps and has both a normally open and normally closed set of contacts.

The long and short of it is that the machine is up and running again for a total cost of five bucks. Thanks guys for the prompt and accurate diagnosis and the next time my washer breaks down I’ll know exactly where to go for advice.
With your help I may be able to keep the old thing going for another ten years HA HA. 😉
