Came across this advice on another post…
“sounds like the commutator needs ‘dressing’ …use very fine emery and spin the motor by hand whilst holding the emery against the copper segments to polish them, then brush them out (an old toothbrush is ideal)
The brushes also need dressing…use a file to carefully file a taper on the sides of the carbon brushes…about 1mm should do the trick. “Worth a try on my new brushes I wonder??

No. No movement at all from motor. Nothing.
I’m reluctantly beginning to think it might have washed its last wash. Unless you can shed any more light. Would really like to keep it going if poss.
By the way, I’ve been quoted these costs for parts, should I go down that route. I’d be interested to hear your view Penguin. These were from the same repair shop which replaced the brushes. They seem a trustworthy outfit, so I’m fighting the urge to suspect they’re just steering me towards a new purchase, rather than repair…
Motor – £470, Timer £372, Module £194.

Back again…
Spoke to local repair/spares shop this morning & they suggested it might need new brushes on motor, bearing in mind machine age. Took motor over, they fitted new brushes, motor back in, no change. Bit stuck what to do next.
One thing I’ve noticed, again not sure if it means anything, the programme/timer dial can’t be heard to be clicking round at all, and I’m sure you’ve always been able to hear it quietly clicking away in the past??

Forgot to mention – the other half tells me she’d been washing a small rug – v heavy when wet. Could an out of balance switch been activated? If so would it reset itself, or does it need doing manually. I would have thought he former?!?

Hi Penguin
Checked WL switch and it clicked as you said.
Blew down rubber pipe with no resistance.Had another good look, and one or two wires show signs of blackening (including some of the ribbon type multiple wires). Is this what you’d expect on a machine this old or poss sign of the problem??
Do I need to consider getting motor checked out?
Any more suggestions appreciated – her indoors getting twitchy – she’ll need sherpa’s to tackle the washing pile.

Thanks for that. I’ll give it a try.
Connected it all up & had another look at it last night, manually advancing the timer.
It fills fine, and pumps out/drains fine. It refuses to agitate or spin. Not sure if this adds anything??

Sorry Penguin, the pump had drained the water.
Meant to say I wanted to check the pump impeller wasn’t jammed, so used the plug/hose in the bottom corner before checking the impeller.
Re your point “If the machine thinks that it’s full of water, it will hold at the drain position for ever…” – do you reckon that’s the problem?

Hi thanks for quick response.
Liking the comment about it being just about run-in – hope you’re right!
The scorching is really localised – maybe the size of a fifty pence, maybe a bit smaller, which made me think it might have been the problem, but I guess the heat could easily have been rising through the gap between the connectors. I have pictures if it would help, but couldn’t work out how to attach?!?
I’ve tried manually advancing the programme, but nothing happens – the machine continues doing what it’s doing until you switch off. I’m pretty sure it’s stuck on pump out – the noise is familiar, not grinding or anything else that sounds unfamiliar.
The door’s locked properly. I manually emptied it last night and checked the pump impeller is free. And all buttons are out.
Any more pointers? Again thanks in advance. Great service by the way.
