The fruit saver is an insulated, electric fruit bowl that promises to keep your fruit fresh longer. Maybe you’ve seen ads that claim it’s “the most innovative kitchen appliance since the microwave oven.” Consumer Reports checked out this 80-dollar kitchen appliance to see if it really is a fruit saver

When you’re shopping for fruit, it looks luscious in the store displays, but keeping it that way once you get home is another story.

The fruit saver claims to have the answer. Ads say this appliance will extend the life of fruit so you can eat healthy foods instead of throwing them away.

Consumer Reports just tested the fruit saver. It’s an insulated bowl that you have to plug in.

Two fans circulate the air inside the bowl to keep the fruit cool.

Cindy Fisher filled the fruit saver with various types of fruit, including bananas, apples, pears, strawberries and grapes.

For comparison, she put the same type of fruit in two other bowls. Then she put one bowl into the refrigerator and the other one was left on the counter.

Four days later when Cindy came back to check on the fruit, the fruit saver wasalready having trouble.

Then after 11 days, she compared the fruit samples from all three bowls. The fruit left on the counter fared the worst. Brown bananas, withered grapes and strawberries covered in mold.

The fruit in the refrigerator looked pretty good, except the bananas turned a strange shade of brown.

As for the fruit saver, well it’s fruit fell somewhere in the middle. The strawberries were shriveled and moldy and the grapes were withered. However, the fruit saver did do better with bananas. They looked great.

Still, consumer Reports says save the 80-dollars and skip the fruit saver. Everything except the bananas will stay fresher in your fridge.
