A self-cleaning washing machine cycle designed to eradicate troublesome washing machine smells has been unveiled Gorenje.
Gorenje says its Steriltub self-cleaning program is able to get rid of ‘unpleasant odours’ from washing machines that can arise through regularly using low temperature washing cycles. It will be added to all new Gorenje washing machine models in time.
Gorenje says running its self-cleaning program once a month will combat this problem ‘with exceptional results’. The 80°C cycle uses more water and double the normal spin speed to clean all corners of the washing machine, according to the company, and should be operated with an empty drum.
If you’re suffering from a smelly washing machine it’s worth running a 60°C program or higher once a month to kill off bacteria and unwanted fungal growth, ideally with a washing powder containing bleach, this is know as a maintenance wash and more instructions can found in the care and cleaning section.

Whether this is any better than a regular maintenance wash or, cleaning the washer out with Affresh is unknown at this point in time.
