The Peterborough Evening Telegraph has reported that a man who dumped a fridge in a courtyard used by residents as a dump has been fined by magistrates. Joseph Bremer, who lives in Paston, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday after dumping the fridge at the courtyard in Orton Goldhay.
The court heard how 46-year-old Bremer had just bought a new fridge from electrical store Currys, and needed to get rid of his old one.
But instead of organising for it to be collected, he told his son and one of his friends to move it ““ and they left it in the courtyard.
The fly-tipping was reported by Catherine Williams, who saw the fridge being dumped, and contacted Cross Keys Homes and the city council to report it.
Mrs Williams said she was particularly annoyed that the fridge had been dumped there because of the free rubbish collection service she knew the city council operated.
The magistrates fined Bremer £100, and ordered him to pay £100 of the costs.
The incident, which happened in October 2006, was one of thousands of fly-tipping incidents reported to the city council last year, costing the tax-payer over £600,000 to clear up.
