From the Detroit Free Press:

“The federal government announced a recall of 250,000 Maytag-brand front loading washing machines, due to the possibility of water leaking onto electrical connections and posing a fire hazard.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a release that also said about 20,000 Samsung-brand front loading units were also effect.

The government said Maytag, a unit of Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corp., reported there were five incidents of the problem resulting in the igniting of the washing machines circuit board. Samsung reported on incident. There were no injuries in any of the cases.

The voluntary recall affects Maytag washers with model numbers beginning with MAH9700 or MAH8700. The Samsung model numbers start with WF306BHW or WF316.”

As yet there is no clarification of whether or not UK or EU Samsung models will be affected by this recall or if they suffer from the same issues.
