Maytag Lights go out in Newton. Maytag is set to close its doors for the final time on 26th October 2007. The factory is left with some 500 workers, who have lost their jobs.Maytag has been a part of Newton for many years, although these days more famous or infamous for the cost £48 Million of the Hoover Free Flight Promotion. At the time Len Hadley was CEO and Hoover Europe was part of Maytag. Old Fred Maytag would be turning in his grave at the closure of this once busy factory & Town. The only thing left in Newton to bare the Maytag brand, will be Maytag Blue cheese.
