Oven And Cooker Door Seals

Oven door seals or gaskets are commonly thought of as being made from rubber as they look and feel similar but in actual fact they are a man made mix of various materials so that they can withstand the heat that they have to cope with from the oven or cooker.

But they do tend to break, crack up and just generally loose shape over the years and will need replaced to keep your oven operating as it should do and, believe it or not keeping the door seal good can actually save you money. You see, as the door seal degrades it lets out warm air from within the oven cavity which will mean that the oven will often be running for longer than it should as well as spilling out the excess heat into your kitchen. This is bad in several ways, it will use more electricity, not vast amounts more but certainly much more than it should and it will also lead to poor or uneven cooking results from your cooker. All in all, it’s not good to have a door seal that’s faulty.

The other nasty side effect is that, if the heat escapes from the sides of the oven then that heat spillage, as well as the associated cooking oil and grease, can hit the kitchen units on either side. This can cause discolouration to the units or kitchen cupboard doors, which is unsightly, but it has been known to warp the doors over time as well.

  Oven Door Seal Types

There are two basic flavours of door seal, three sided which are also known as a “goalpost” door seal and a four sided door seal. For the most part they will invariably just clip on and are usually very easy to change. They normally simply clip on and pull off, simple.

However there are also several types that are less common and can be critical that they are ordered correctly.

One such is many door gaskets used on pyrolitic ovens that will often be of a high heat woven fabric type of gasket that is specifically designed to withstand the high heat employed when the oven is used on a cleaning cycle.

Anotehr is on older ovens where, again, they seals are ofen a woven fabric type that resemble rope to a degree.

  Saving Money On Oven Door Seals

Very often original door seals for ovens and cookers can be expensive, some stupidly so as well as no longer available at times as well. To combat this we introduced a couple of universal door seals that can be cut to size, you can find these in our online shop from this link.

These universal cooker and oven door seals are good but they can take a bit of messing about to fit. Not that it’s hard, it’s just that to get them to go on perfectly takes a bit of time making sure that you cut them to the correct size.

For that reason alone we do advise that, if you can get the correct seal for your oven and it’s a reasonable price then please do so as it’s a lot easier to fit usually and, a perfect fit.

  Fitting An Oven Door Seal

Normally this is very simple for almost anyone to do.

On all but the more specialised types of oven such as the pyro ovens mentioned, the seal is usually simply cliped by small securing lugs or clips at each corner or the end in the case of a three sided door seal.

Simply clip the old seal off and clip the new one on. It’s that simple, usually.

Some more moderns seals do have to stretch slightly to fit, this tension helps then to retain their shape and to produce a good tight seal. We do hear some people being concerned by this when fitting but, so long as the seal is the correct one for the model then there should be no issue and this should be assumed to be normal.
