Samsung Fault Codes

Samsung washing machine fault codes

Until lately almost all Samsung washing machines used these fault codes that we will cover in this article. These are the most common fault codes for Samsung washing machine models up until about 2013/14.

The error code is displayed as a digital code, exactly as you will see below with little variation on most models.

Before you start any investigation of the fault or even remove the lid of your Samsung washing machine please read and fully understand this article in full and pay particular attention to the safety and information notices at the bottom of this page as they contain extremely important information!

Please remember to support our site by buying Samsung washing machine spares from our spare part store and, if you decide that you need a washing machine engineer please support the local repairers that help make this site possible, you can search for an approved local Samsung washing machine repairer using our engineer search.

  Samsung Washing Machine Fault Codes

These fault codes are written for washing machine repairers and not for the general public by Samsung and they assume a certain level of competence on the part of the user in diagnostic routines. We have added some notes to try to assist you in determining the nature of the fault you have but, you will still need to investigate each failure on its own merits. For more help and advice on fault finding on a washing machine please refer to our washing machine fault finding guide from this link before you begin.

Please check that any Samsung washing machine spares recommended are suitable for use on your particular model and serial number. If you are unsure about the suitability of any spare part please ask to ensure that you get the correct spares for your washing machine or washer dryer. Please, don’t guess or assume as spares can be altered on a production run with the same model number having several different alternative components used.

If you struggle or cannot find the appropriate fault code that you need for your Samsung washing machine please ask in the forums and the gusy there will do what they can to help and locate the meaning of the fault code you need

E1

Not filling in allocated time

This is essentially a fill timeout error which will normally mean that either the water isn’t on or that an inlet valve has failed. We do list the generic water inlet valves for Samsung washing machines in this section and, if you’re clever you can use one of those by altering the connections but, if you need the genuine one specific to your model please contact us.

E2

Pump won’t empty – not draining

As usual with these error codes for not draining the first thing to do is check the pump filter but, on Samsung washing machines, the drain pump itself is often faulty. When replacing the drain pump there are two basic options, the genuine one from Samsung which is available from this link or, the cheap version which is essentially the same pump from this link, for about a quarter of the price of the drain pump with a Samsung part number on it.

Also see below about detergent use as it applies to drain errors as well as overfill error codes.

E3

Overflow – overfilling with water

This fault code tells you that the washing machine has detected an overfill situation and, usually, they will stop and drain for safety then report the error code above.

This error can be caused by poor quality detergent or overdosing detergent both leading to excessive foam. This foam traps air in the pressure sensor hose and falsifies the error of an overfill. If this is the case, if you leave the machine for an hour or so and try it again it should then be clear but, whatever you do when you try it again do not put more detergent in the machine.

If this solves it, adjust the detergent quantity or switch to a better quality detergent to prevent it happening again.

E4

Out Of Balance (OOB) detected

This is basically an imbalanced wash load detected that the machine has failed to sort out on its own and therefore couldn’t spin to the full speed. Just sort the load and try it again.

E5

Water temp rising or falling too quickly

Normally an NTC temperature sensor or wiring to the sensor that’s faulty. For parts please contact us with your model and serial number.

E6

Water temp rising or falling too quickly

As above.

E7

Pressure switch

The error code is telling you that there is an error or fault somewhere in the pressure switch circuit, this could be the switch itself, the wiring or the main control module.

E8

Temp too high on low temp washes

Normally this will be the wash temperature thermistor or NTC that’s faulty, please contact us if you need the thermistor with the model and serial number.

E9

Water leak, Water level has reduced

Basically this fault code means that the water level has dropped while the machine has been running so, it’s either a leak, faulty pressure sensor, wiring, water escaping to the drain or the control PCB.

EA

Motor tacho generator error

Self explanatory fault code. Samsung do not supply parts for their motors, only full motors and they can be model specific so please contact us if you need a motor for your washing machine.

EB

Motor triac error

As above.

EC

Thermistor

As fault code E8

ED

Door Open

Close the door and restart the program!

If that doesn’t cure the problem it will most likely mean that the door lock is faulty and there’s two commonly used on Samsung washing machines, this one and this one.

  Get Samsung Washing Machine Parts

Getting the correct spare part to repair your Samsung washing machine can be very confusing as there are many variants, even with the model number it is sometimes the case that a serial or production number will be required to ensure that you get the correct spare part.

Apart from that there are often lower cost compatible spares available that we may be able to recommend that can offer you a considerable saving.

We recommend that you contact us with the model information and we will give you guidance on pricing, availability and any lower cost alternatives that can be used.

  More Samsung Washing Machine Help

Should you need more help and guidance please use the links from this article as most of them will help you to understand your Samsung washing machine a lot better and probably very much help you in diagnosing the fault you have. Of course there are many other articles on the site that will also help you do this.

In addition you can post in our washing machine forum after registering but please do pay heed to the information below before doing so and read the guides, they are there to help you.

You must understand certain things before you begin or attempt any repairs on your own and we want to make these points very, very clear to anyone that decides to investigate one of these or any other washing machines:

  • We are not responsible for your safety, you are and by using this guide you accept that and accept that any damage that you may cause and work undertaken is entirely at your own risk.
  • We will advise the common causes of the fault codes but we cannot guarantee that any parts or work recommended will resolve the issue. It is entirely your responsibility to diagnose your particular problem and resolve it.
  • We are not responsible for you buying spares that do not resolve the problem, this is down to your own diagnosis not ours.
  • No warranty is inferred, implied or given.

You also have to be aware that fault or error codes are not a “magic bullet”, they will not tell you exactly what the problem is or what exact component has failed, they will only offer you an indication of where the problem lies and they are no substitute for diagnostic skills. You can find out more about what fault codes actually tell you in this article. So please be well aware that, even with this new found knowledge you will still have to actually be capable of investigating and diagnosing the problem and this means adhering to basic appliance safety for working on them.

Please note that manufacturers can and do change fault codes without notice and we cannot guarantee that these error codes will apply to your particular model as all codes apply to a wide range of appliances and not normally any one specific model. To determine if these fault codes do apply to your particular Samsung washing machine model please post a request to confirm this in the forums.

  1. Hi, My Samsung top loader seems to have a problem. I bought a new machine a month ago, as I thought the old one was faulty. However, the new machine appears to have the same problem: When I turn it on, the water runs straight through for about an hour (or more) before it even starts washing. (While this is going on the timer is static). I cannot bear this waste of water and time as each small load of washing can take up to 4 hours! Admittedly our water pressure is not that great. Could this be causing the sensor to malfunction and not switch off the inlet valve? Thanks Kathleen

  2. Hi Kathleen,If you ask in the forums the engineers will see your question, they will not see it in the articles.Regards

  3. Hi,If you ask in the forums with the model number someone should be able to help as these codes may not related to the actual model of Samsun washing machine that you own and they can be range specific. These fault codes do not relate to the top loading washing machines so far as we know.
